Co-production: A resource to guide co-producing research in the sport, exercise, and health sciences

There is growing interest in co-production the sport, exercise, and health sciences. That includes from researchers sport exercise physiology, public health, sports medicine, sociology, psychology, management, physical education, coaching, leisure studies, geography, occupational therapy. Despite disciplinary spanning interest, academic resources our field dedicated to complex problem of comprehensively detailing research taking it forward are lacking. This paper a modest attempt do this. Rationales outlining need for resource first presented. What meant by then attended to. An original typology developed illuminate different ways defined put use. In three differing types described: Citizens’ Contributions Public Services; Integrated Knowledge Translation; Equitable Experientially-informed Research. Why co-produce research, along with various challenges involved doing it, offered. It suggested that generally university structures norms tend not facilitate processes. Next, working principles promote as means advance participatory turn introduced. We also highlight practical options how criteria judging quality it. Throughout highlighted why qualitative well prepared high co-produced should be considered important collaborators without expertise intending research. The closes future directions.
